History professor wins award for engineering research

Amy Bix, associate professor of history and director of ISU’s Center for Historical Studies of Technology and Science, wrote “Girls Coming to Tech!: A History of American Engineering Education for Women,” which earned an award from the Women in Engineering ProActive Network.

LAS economist studies voter polarization in the U.S.

Sunanda Roy, an economics lecturer at ISU, said the proportion of people whose preferences are directly opposite — the reverse of each other — has become more and more significant. The study has broader implications about the best methods of electing government officials. For example, Roy said, analyzing the votes received by the victor in a presidential election doesn’t necessarily provide a good indication of the amount of opposition to that candidate.

Sociology professor: No paid leave for families is shameful

President Obama outlined several initiatives aimed at improving workplace flexibility and access to affordable child care as part of a White House Summit on Working Families. The president highlighted the fact that the U.S. is the only developed country to not offer government-sponsored paid maternity leave – a fact that Susan Stewart, an associate professor of sociology at Iowa State University, says needs to change.
