Two speech communications students have been selected to participate in a prestigious state-wide debate. The first-ever Mediacom Collegiate Invitational Debate will include representatives from six Iowa universities. Kelly Erbes and Tim Overton both competed in high school debate competitions in Iowa before coming to ISU as speech majors. During the fall semester, they enrolled in the major’s argumentation and debate course, SpCm 322, where they refined their skills competing with other highly talented ISU debaters.

The Public Forum style debate will take place at the Drake University Legal Clinic this Saturday, April 11, from 9:00 in the morning until about 5:00pm. It is open to the public. Mediacom will also broadcast the debate on MC22 and in OnDemand following the live event. The event will be judged by prominent national and state authorities, including the National Debate Association executive director, a representative from the Des Moines Register, and others.

The winning two-person team and the runner-up team will receive financial scholarship awards.
