Have fun and games with The Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities this semester

Author: Troy Rutter

The Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities is happy to introduce the new initiative “Fun and Games (Research) with the CEAH” this semester. These events will be a place for faculty to come together and share their research while also engaging in playing games and having fun. The goal is to build community between humanities faculty (or anyone else interested) via playing some games) while also learning about the fascinating games research going on here at ISU.

Each event will begin with 15-minute invited talk by a faculty member at ISU doing research on Games and related areas. After a brief Q&A session everyone in attendance will then be invited to stay and play a game such as Flip 7, Sushi Go or other similar group games. Snacks will be available for everyone attending.

The first event will take place on September 30 from 4 PM – 7 PM at the Tearoom (23 Mackay Hall).

September 30
The talk: New Media Cults: Teaching Influencer Culture through a Board Game
Speaker: Jeffery Wheatley

Jeff Wheatley is an Assistant Professor whose research and teaching span history, religion, and game studies. His first book, American Fanatics: Religion, Rebellion, and Empire in the Nineteenth Century, critically examines media representations of fanatical religious groups deemed threatening to the growing US. A founding faculty member of the Game Design Major, he splits his classes between Religious Studies and Game Design. His emerging projects examine the shared vocabulary of the sacred in early Religious Studies and Game Studies scholarship, gamification for education, and how humanities research can inform game mechanics, theme, and world-building.
