The Women in French 2022 (WIF 2022) virtual conference “Margins: Voices and Pathways” will be held May 12-14. This conference will be offered online.
Hosted by Iowa State University and sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of World Languages and Cultures, the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, the Center for the Excellence in the Arts and Humanities, and the Québec Minister of International Relations and la Francophonie, WIF 2022 constitutes a unique event at the national and international levels. It is the first academic venue in French and Francophone Studies to consider various forms of marginalizations holistically.
Registration is available now at this link.
WIF 2022 panel discussions will feature topics such as: disabilities, aging, women of color or LGBTIQPA+ artists and intellectuals. Underrepresented Francophone regions such as Asia or the Pacific Islands, will be discussed, as well as other subjects.
Dean Beate Schmittmann will give opening remarks and two keynote speakers will highlight the event. Professor Anne Donadey from San Diego State University will provide the academic keynote on French writer Leïla Sebbar. Author Claire Legendre from the Université de Montréal will present her latest documentary, which will be subtitled in English and followed by a Q&A session. She will also discuss her latest book with the public.
The French Pacific Islands will also be the subject of a keynote panel. Tahitian poet Flora Aurima Devatine will be a part of the panel, as well as two leading scholars—Professor Jean Anderson from Wellington University in New Zealand and Julia Frengs, professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
In keeping with Iowa State’s land-grant tradition, all four virtual events will be open to the public.
Finally, LGBTIQAP+ French writer and artist Wendy Delorme graciously agreed to be a respondent to one of the panels.
The WIF 2022 conference is co-organized by Michèle A. Schaal, associate professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures and the Women’s and Gender Studies program; and Arline Cravens, assistant professor of French at Saint Louis University.
