Professor of Religious Studies Hector Avalos died on April 12 following a battle with cancer. A memorial service is
being planned for early fall 2021. His body was cremated and his remains will be interred at the university cemetery.
Avalos joined the religious studies faculty at Iowa State in 1993. He founded the US Latino/a studies program. The family has suggested memorial donations go to the Vasculitis Foundation which supports those who suffer from various diseases affecting blood vessels, including Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis, the illness Avalos endured since about 1978.
