LAS Support for the Arts

Author:

Two new programs were established, made possible by the Transforming LAS initiative [endowment]. The Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Faculty Fellow in the Arts and the Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Artist in Residence programs are ones that faculty in the arts have long hoped to establish. They resonate well with the donors’ interest in supporting theatre and the arts more broadly.

Nominations for both programs are due to Gaye Simonson by EOB on September 1, 2018. Recipients will be notified around September 15. Multiple awards can be funded; award amounts are based on need but should not exceed a maximum of $25,000 per award. As the programs evolve, the award amounts may be adjusted for maximum impact.

In the future, an annual call for nominations will go out in February, together with the call for LAS Deans professorships and innovation awards. Please contact Beate Schmittmann with any questions or concerns.

###Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Faculty Fellow in the Arts

The Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Faculty Fellow in the Arts will provide funding for one of our faculty members to allow them to pursue a creative opportunity off-campus, e.g. directing a play, acting or playing in a performance, or conducting a concert, which would involve a full or partial teaching replacement for a limited period of time.

This award is designed to help enhance the visibility and reputation of high-performing LAS faculty members in the creative and performing arts, primarily music, theatre and creative writing. Nominated faculty must be tenured or tenure-track and in excellent standing with the department and college. The award can be used to cover teaching replacement costs and, to a limited degree, travel expenses. The host institution is expected to cover local expenses and provide salary supplementation, should the commitment require a full or partial leave without pay. It is a one-year award. It cannot be renewed but faculty can re-apply for it in future years.

Nominations

Department chairs in the relevant departments may nominate faculty for this award. Nominations must include the name of the award, a current CV, and a 1-2 page description of the creative activity in which the faculty member proposes to take part. The nomination should also include a description of the faculty member’s teaching responsibilities and how they will be addressed as well as a budget of anticipated costs, including any support from the host.

Nominations are due September 1, 2018. In future years: March 1.

###Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Artist in Residence

The Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Artist in Residence provides funding to bring an artist from elsewhere to campus, for a similar creative experience – a master class, participating in a performance, or an intense workshop experience.

This award is designed to help bring renowned creative or performing artists to campus, primarily in music, theatre and creative writing, to participate in an artistic endeavor at ISU. This endeavor should involve intense interactions with LAS students and faculty in the relevant program(s) and enhance the visibility of our people and programs by virtue of these interactions. It should typically be of short duration (e.g., a few days to a few weeks). Nominated individuals should have a record of excellence in their field. Funding is awarded primarily to support local expenses and an honorarium. It must not be used to support visitors or adjunct faculty for periods of a semester or longer. It is a one-time award.

Nominations

Department chairs in the relevant departments may nominate renowned artists and writers for this award. Nominations must include the name of the award, a current CV or resume, and a 1-2 page description of the proposed artistic endeavor and its benefits to our students and faculty. The nomination should also include a budget of anticipated costs, including any support available from non-ISU sources.

Nominations are due: September 1, 2018. In future years: March 1
