Reminder: Funding opportunities for interdisciplinary research

CATEGORIES: Announcements

A unique research funding opportunity is now available for LAS interdisciplinary research projects. The LAS Signature Research Incubator (SRI) was created to stimulate and foster interdisciplinary programs that address major challenges facing humanity, advancing the land-grant ideals of putting human creativity, science and technology to work.

The SRI provides seed funding to generate opportunities for innovation that might not otherwise occur, building on the college’s five Signature Themes:

  • Biological structures and systems
  • Complex materials
  • Data-rich environments
  • Economic, environmental and societal sustainability
  • Global citizens, education, and technology

The funding is available for research initiatives in two categories: $25,000 – $50,000 per year and up to $100,000 per year, pending availability of funds. The intent of the seed funding is to support research development, and the funding should support students, faculty time in teaching-intensive disciplines and limited equipment development. For larger projects the funds could be used for matching funds and supporting activities such as workshops and funding visits for consultation. Research collaborators are encouraged to link activities to other Iowa State initiatives and opportunities incorporated in the ISU and LAS strategic plans.

A letter-of-intent is required by October 1, 2017. Proposals for SRI funding are due October 15, 2017, and funding would begin for successful projects the following fiscal year (July 1). Criteria and other details are posted on the LAS Grant Opportunities page.
