In honor of Dr. Chester Britt

CATEGORIES: Uncategorized

Dear faculty and staff,

It is with deep sadness that we write to inform you about the passing of Dr. Chet Britt, Chair of the Department of Sociology.

Dr. Britt passed away this morning, Aug. 30, 2016, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. There will be a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the United Church of Christ-Congregational, 217 6th Street in Ames. Following the memorial service, a reception will be held in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.

Dr. Britt’s tenure at Iowa State was all too short, but over the past year he had a positive impact on the sociology department and quickly forged a path for its continued success. More about Dr. Britt’s 2015 appointment and his career: http://www.soc.iastate.edu/staff/britt.html. All of us were looking forward to working with Chet far into the future as a colleague, so it’s shocking to comprehend that Iowa State has lost such a dedicated leader. He will most certainly be missed, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and peers.

The Iowa State University Foundation has set up the Chet Britt Memorial Fund for friends, colleagues and alumni to honor Dr. Britt’s career. Memorial gifts may be made online at www.foundation.iastate.edu/gift (the bottom of the page offers an area to enter “Chet Britt Memorial Fund”) or checks may be made out to ISU Foundation and mailed to: 2505 University Blvd., Ames, IA 50010.

Please continue to keep Dr. Britt’s family in your thoughts and hearts. And please remember that the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free resource for ISU employees dealing with stressful situations.
