2016-2017 Engaged Scholar Faculty Fellows Selected
Dr. Amber Manning-Ouellette, a faculty member in Iowa State University’s Leadership Studies program, was selected by Iowa Campus Compact as one of five 2016-2017 Engaged Scholar Faculty Fellows.
Manning-Ouellette teaches leadership courses including service-learning and a global leadership study abroad program in Stockholm, Sweden. She is passionate about civic engagement; committing to over 5 years of teaching service-learning. She has been involved in several service-learning initiatives such as community projects in Kenya, Africa and urban communities in Illinois and Iowa. Her project is a course entitled "Campus Leadership Development Service-learning." The course has a standing service component and the proposed project for 2016-2017 aims to have students partner with the Community Housing Initiative, a nonprofit community organization in Des Moines and Ames. In groups, students will develop academic programming for the children, provide leadership opportunities for students of East High School, and develop a large-scale activism project to promote social change.
The Engaged Scholar program promotes community-engaged scholarship and teaching. Selected fellows participate in a learning community throughout the year while launching or enhancing a service-learning course or other community-engaged research or project. They also receive a $1,000 stipend to support their efforts.
