ROTC units bring fire to the ice

On Jan. 29, 2016, the Iowa State University hockey team held a Military Appreciation Night at their game against University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos. All three of the Iowa State ROTC units were present and cheering on the cyclones. The event included competitions between periods between the Midshipmen and Cadets.

The night began with a tri-service presentation of the colors on the ice for the national anthem.

“It was awesome that Iowa State recognizes veterans like this,” said Midshipman Krumrei.

Iowa State demonstrates pride in the veteran population on campus in many ways, including recognition at sporting events.

The Midshipmen and Cadets cheered for the Cyclones and after the first period, all four ROTCs competed in a broom ball game. The Air Force ROTC led the Marines with a final score of 1-0, while the Navy and Army finished their match tied at 0-0.

In true competitive fashion, Midshipman George Peterson said, “Even though the game ended in a tie, Navy had more shots on them!”

The next competition was a shoot-off between the ROTC Branches, with no winner declared.

“Events like this provided for good camaraderie and cyclone spirit,” said Midshipman Walker.
