Barjchè 2016

CATEGORIES: Uncategorized

Barjchè (pronounced Bar‐Shay) Iowa State University’s annual modern dance concert, was first created in 1944 by three Iowa State students, Barbara, Jean and Charlotte. The founding members of ISU’s dance club Orchesis I combined their three names and talents to create a modern dance concert.  Since that time Barjchè has been produced annually by the Orchesis I dance company.  To celebrate over 70 years of Barjche` concerts the theme for Barjchè 2016 is “Modern Dance through the Ages”.

The contemporary modern dance production Barjchè weaves the original vision of the founders with glimpses of historical developments in American Modern Dance and it’s relation to the current events of the time.  Inspirations from various influential modern dance figures such as Doris Humprhey, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Alvin Ailey and Twyla Tharp, will bring the audience on an historical ride through the eyes of today’s Orchesis I members, faculty, and guests.

The guest artist company Joe Goode Performance Group spent a week with the teaching and choreographing excerpt from “The Rambler,” choreographed by renowned San Francisco based Joe Goode.  Joe Goode is choreographer, writer, and director widely known as an innovator in the field of dance for his willingness to collide movement with spoken word, song, and visual imagery. Joe Goode was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship pin 2007, and the United States Artists Glover Fellowship in 2008 for his unflagging commitment to innovation and experimentation in dance and theater. In 2006, Goode directed the opera Transformations for the San Francisco Opera Center. His play Body Familiar, commissioned by the Magic Theatre in 2003, was met with critical acclaim. Other featured choreography is by Barjchè Artistic Director Cynthia Adams, alumni and current members of Orchesis I.
