Finding your passion with a true adventure

ISU College of Business

Iowa State University; a place where I knew everything was going to fall into place and layout my future. I was going to come into the College of Business, learn about marketing and the world of business, and find a great career with a company somewhere nationwide. But unfortunately, that’s not how it went at all.

When I came to Iowa State, I knew I wanted an adventure. I mean, that’s what they always say on their commercials, right? Iowa State University has always been my dream school ever since the seventh grade. I was determined to make my application flawless and be accepted right away; which is exactly what happened. My dream came true and I was on my way to college!

My first semester as a college student, how exciting is that? I was enrolled in my pre-business courses that my business advisor encouraged me to take such as Economics 101 and Business Careers and Employment Preparation 101. Since taking courses such as this, I found that I did not have a love for it like I thought I would. I was beginning to feel hopeless because I knew this is something that I did not want to do for the rest of my life. I became desperate, trying to find every which way possible I could stay at Iowa State but do something that I would love doing as a career.

Little to my knowledge, I found refuge at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I talked to an advisor about what I was passionate about, what options were available at the university that would help me find where I belong, and begin a whole new major! I found a home within the Performing Arts department because I have been a dancer and performer for nearly 17 years at the time. The Performing Arts department offered more than just theatrical classes, but classes also in design, script analysis, and dance! Dance; that was where it hit home for me. I talked to the dance lecturers that we have here at the university and they helped me realize that this is what I should be majoring in. They helped me with my scheduling as well as develop a four-year plan that would be structured to have me graduate at my desired time.

For some college students, it is hard to know exactly what you want to do right out of high school. I thought I knew what I wanted to do, but I was very wrong. That is why I am so happy that I was able to utilize the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and its amazing and informative advisors into helping me find what I do best. For those students who do not know what they want to do with their lives, you need to do something that you are passionate about. If you have a career with something that you truly love, you will never have to work a day in your life. Iowa State University and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have helped me find my calling in life and have helped mold it into what I know is going to make me happy in the future. With someone who was going to work in a corporate setting, I am happy to say that I know what I am going to do with my education that I am currently receiving at Iowa State, and that is to open a dance studio and teach people of all ages. I know that I am going to be happy with what I have chosen to do for the rest of my life, and I hope current and future students learn to love what they do as well!
