Outstanding Teaching by a Lecturer Recognizes lecturers or senior lecturers for outstanding teaching performance over an extended period of time in undergraduate education:

• Terence Alexander, Senior Lecturer, Department of Economics. For 21 years, Alexander has taught economics at all levels at Iowa State, from the first class taken by freshmen to the last class taken by seniors. Over that time, thousands of students have come to appreciate the fundamentals of market economics and scores of them have decided to major or minor in economics. He has demonstrated that high-quality instruction can excite interest without compromising scholarship. In both his classes and his advising, Alexander has influenced careers, enriched lives, opened doors, enflamed passions for learning, and embodied the Iowa State theme of academics as an adventure.

• David Flory, Senior Lecturer, Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences. Flory is an exceptional teacher, dedicated advisor, and an indispensable member of the Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences. He teaches large enrollment introductory courses for all majors and courses for meteorology undergraduates at all levels. A very demanding instructor, he consistently receives very high student evaluations. His commitment goes beyond the classroom and involves the Graduate Learning Community Inspired by Teaching, the Earth Wind & Fire departmental learning community, mentoring of senior meteorology majors on their capstone project that goes way beyond the call of duty, and the responsibility of the IT infrastructure needed in the meteorology program.

• Thomas Waldemer, Senior Lecturer, Department of World Languages and Cultures. Since 2002, Waldemer, senior lecturer of Spanish, has distinguished himself as an exemplary, versatile scholar-teacher, whose excellent teaching performance has greatly enriched the Spanish, International Studies, and World Film Studies programs. His outstanding teaching portfolio includes 23 different courses, an impressive annual average teaching load of 550 SCH’s per year, and high evaluation statistics across courses: 4.3 for overall instructor and 4.1 for overall course rating. His dedication to student-centered learning goes far beyond the classroom, as he consistently makes significant instructional contributions to the department and the College of LAS through a wide variety of curricular-related service assignments.
