A new team in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will help build the college’s research enterprise. New grant coordinators in the College of LAS are part of the newly organized LAS External Research Support team (LASERS).

The group will collaborate with LAS faculty and departmental grant coordinators to assist with the preparation of grant and contract proposals for federal and non-federal sponsors and provide advice on planning and preparation of these proposals.

Diane Smith, Holly Mace and Sandra Norvell are new grant coordinators in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The LASERS team includes grant coordinators Holly Mace, Sandra Norvell and Diane Smith, as well as Venita Currie, LAS fiscal officer, and Martin Spalding, LAS associate dean for research and graduate studies.

“There is more demand for additional documentation and information to accompany proposals,” Spalding said. “LASERS will provide proposal preparation support for faculty so they can focus more on the research and scholarship of the proposal.”

The LASERS grant coordinators can assist with the following:

Identification of possible funding opportunities
Interpretation of proposal guidelines
Preparation of GoldSheets, budgets, budget justifications
Subcontract communications (pre-award only)
Assembly of biosketches or CVs, current and pending support, conflict-of-interest lists
Uploading of documents to FastLane, Cayuse or Grants.gov
Eventually, the LASERS team will develop some “boiler-plate” templates for such things as postdoctoral mentoring and data management, and will act as a resource to assist in development of “Broader Impacts” sections for NSF proposals

Each grant coordinator will have a primary responsibility for the following departments:

Holly Mace, 294-2280, hlizzy@iastate.edu Computer Science Economics Geological and Atmospheric Sciences Mathematics Psychology
