Hope Mitchell’s master’s thesis that she successfully defended in April, "Sacrificing Our Daughters: Changing Perceptions of Prostitution in Iowa, 1880-1915," has won this year’s Master’s Award from the Iowa History Center based at Simpson College in Indianola.

Mitchell sat in Pamela Riney-Kehrberg’s (professor and chair of history) class on the history of rural women as one of her classmates declined the topic when it was suggested in relation to the mining camps of the West. Mitchell was instantly smitten with how she might "take a taboo subject and break it out in an academic way."
