Mack Shelley is the next chair of Political Science at Iowa State

University Professor Mack Shelley is the next chair of the Department of Political Science, an academic department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He succeeds Professor James McCormick, who served as chair for 15 years and remains on the Iowa State faculty.
Mack Shelley“Mack Shelley is an experienced and highly respected campus leader and scholar,” said Beate Schmittmann, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “He has the right vision to lead the department to the next stage of excellence.”
Shelley has a joint appointment in the Departments of Political Science and Statistics. His research interests include public policy (education, aging and disability, health, biotechnology, transportation, and environment), program evaluation, American politics, social statistics, multivariate methods, time series and forecasting, linear models, and survey research methods.
Paul Lasley, chair of the Departments of Anthropology and Sociology, chaired the search committee. “The department is very fortunate to have someone with the incredible experience and talents of Mack Shelley who is willing to serve as chair,” Lasley said. “Mack is well known across the university and with external groups, agencies, and foundations. His professional visibility and experiences were viewed as important assets for leading the department.”
Shelley earned his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977. He joined the Iowa State faculty in 1979 and was named a University Professor in 2006.
