Are you teaching a general education course in a large lecture format? If so, consider offering a section of LAS Connections. It’s a great way for you to connect with a small group of students and share your passion for your disciplines outside the formality of the lecture hall and traditional grading.
LAS Connections…
– link a large lecture class with a small learning community/seminar session led by the same faculty member teaching the lecture. In each case the professor teaching the large lecture will facilitate a small weekly seminar. The seminar is designed to explore the connections between the lecture topic and issues and areas beyond the lecture discipline. Topics for Connections include courses from all general education areas, applicable to all majors in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
– feature informal discussions about critical issues that allow students to explore topics above and beyond those discussed in lecture.
– meet once a week for one credit.
– enroll 20-25 students on a voluntary basis.
While any student can register, enrollment in LAS Connections is strongly encouraged for entering first-year Open Option students attending Orientation in June. It allows you to show case your major or minor to students who are seeking their academic niche at Iowa State.
