AMES, Iowa – Tunde Adeleke, professor of history and director of the African and African American Studies program at Iowa State University, has received a 2013-2014 Fulbright Senior Scholar award.

Adeleke is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad next year through the Fulbright Scholar Program to fulfill the program’s mission to build mutual understanding between people of the United States and the world.

Adeleke will go to Bucharest, Romania, for six months starting October 2013. He will teach classes on African American studies at the University of Bucharest and conduct research focusing on the similarities and differences between black Americans and black Europeans.

“My teaching would help enrich the cultural contents of the American Studies Program at Bucharest, and thus contribute to ongoing expansions of the curriculum,” said Adeleke. His research on black Europeans and black Americans has been in process for more than six years.

“My goal is to publish an article at the end of my time in Bucharest to show the comparative studies between the Roma and modern black Americans,” said Adeleke. “My research would be a major contribution to understanding the intersection of ethnic minority experiences.

“I’m very excited about being a recipient of the competitive fellowship.”

The Fulbright program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.

Adeleke is in his seventh year at Iowa State. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Western Ontario.

History and the African and African American Studies program are academic units in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at ISU.
